I downloaded and tested all the mood tracking iOS apps I could find, for a total of 24 apps.
How it started
- High level goal: track mood changes throughout the day to uncover any correlations/patterns –> essentially, more data
- Tracking factors: ability to attach who/what/where, mood descriptors (custom would be ideal), insights, accountability for daily tracking
- Not particularly looking for: heavy focus on journaling, digital therapist, self soothing therapy methods, steps to be happier
How it ended
- Too much pressure and energy to be aware of all my mood changes, what was causing them, and then logging throughout the day
- Did it everyday for 3 weeks and stopped

#1 Breeze: mood tracker, diary
Mood tracking process:
- First question “How are you (time of day)?” with a mood scale out of 5 feels like a friendly and approachable process each time
- Choose activities associated with mood
- Choose mood feeling descriptors
- Add a title and notes related to mood entry
Pros:
- Beautiful design
- Ability to add custom mood activities and feelings
- Can add mood entry any time of day
- Entered moods are displayed as vertical scrolling timeline
Cons:
- Initial categorization of activities and feelings took some time
- Insights behind paywall
- Insights felt very basic for the cost compared to cost value of other mood tracking app insights

#2 Reflectly – Journal & AI Diary
Mood tracking process:
- Choose general feeling on scale of 7 and associated feeling descriptors
- Choose activities associated with mood
- Add a short note related to mood entry
Pros:
- Whimsical design
- Ability to add custom mood activities
- Can add mood entry any time of day
- Sleep tracker entry option <3
- Digital workshops on how to cope with certain emotional issues (didn’t use)
Cons:
- Can’t add custom feeling descriptors
- Basic stats for free, more detailed stats behind paywall
- Stats had a lot of potential, displayed info very straightforward. Wanted more connections being drawn between the data.

#3 Bearable – Symptoms & Moods
For the use case of multiple mood entries a day, it would be great to be able to associate each mood entry with its own set of factors. Where right now the factors apply for the whole day, across both negative and positive moods. The bonus would be having insights on which factors are more often linked to which moods. Used for 1.5 weeks.
Pros:
- Detailed mood tracking factors: symptoms (ex: sweating, heart palpitations), factors (who, what, where), sleep, health, energy level

#4 Mooditude — Mental Health Kit
Fun and cute illustrative design. Onboarding questions felt overwhelming, would have liked a “skip” or “set up later” option. Focus on journaling, many prompts available. Lots of other resources: CBT, habits, forums. Used for 1 week.
Pros:
- Granular feeling scale with many options for associating who, when, where, what
- Feeling descriptors are descriptive

#5 MindDoc: Your Companion
Simple design. Heavy focus on getting as analysis on your emotional health every 14 days based on mood entries. Then a presented options for improving your emotional health. Guided questions throughout the day, basic mood entry factors. Enjoyed the guided questions. Did not like that insights were shared every 14 days. Used for 2.5 weeks.

Ladder: Stress, Anxiety, & CBT
Nice design. Heavy focus on self-care and digital therapy resources. Could only enter mood 3 times a day (morning, afternoon, evening). Used for 2 days.

Daylio Journal
Very popular app, but I could not get past the design. Mood entry data displayed very chaotically. Color palette options were not for me. Used for 1 day.

Jour: Daily Self-Care Journal
Soothing, float, pastel design. Lots of resources: guided journaling, meditation exercises. Huge con: 1 mood entry to sum up the day. Did not use.

Joyster: CBT Guided Journaling

Innersource
Heavy focused on journaling. Mood attached to journal entry. Not fit for my use case. Did not use.
HappyMe: Mood Tracker & Diary
Perspective, a mindful journal
Feelsom: Wellness Tracker
MoodWell: moody tracker diary
Feelings Diary – Mood Journal
Moodnotes – Mood Tracker
Bloom: CBT Therapy & Self-Care

Sayana: Daily Self-Care
Illustrations full of different personality, very enjoyable. Personally, did not enjoy the AI aspect of it. Did not fit my needs. Did not use.

Tangerine: Self-care & Goals
Trendy illustrative design, fun palette. Too much of a focus on forming habits and journaling for my use case. 1 mood entry to sum up the day wasn’t effective for me. Did not use.

Mood App: Journal
Could not get into it. Did not use.
Mood Tracker – Daily Journal
Could not get into it. Did not use.
Mood Tracker & Diary Journal
Could not get over the design, too much frog green for my preference. Sample images also felt too happy/optimistic for tracking fluctuating moods. Did not use.

Moody: Mood Tracker & Journal
Could not get past the sample screens. Seemed to be targeting a very specific audience (tech bros), not meant for those dealing with anxiety/stress. Icons feel very trendy. Insights look very very basic: no in-depth connections, simple summary count of selected moods. Did not use.

Sophia – Master Your Mood
Not updated for iOS 14. Did not use.
